The Browser got a bit ahead of itself last week in comparing a new box from Vonage (VG) to hardware from VOIP upstart Ooma, which is selling a $400 device that enables unlimited, free domestic calls.

A company spokesman called to set us straight: The unsexily named VDV21 is “basically a router that looks great,” he says. The box supports a couple of Vonage phone lines.

So Vonage, for now, isn’t about to disrupt its monthly subscription model by going all Ooma on us. In fact, the VDV21 may serve to enhance the collection of monthly payments. The new device, which is just in trials at this stage, includes a built-in LCD screen that lets the company’s customer support folks send messages to customers. What kind of messages? The Vonage rep says customer-service might send a subscriber a gentle reminder when the credit card they have on file is about to expire, helping to ensure Vonage gets paid.

I agree with Bruce above - I’m also very Satisfied with my PAP2 phone adapter and Vonage’s service. It sits behind my router as a normal computer would and doesn’t need any “special” vonage router. And taking the PAP2 on the road is definitely an EASY and Nice Advantage!

As President and CEO of the “I hate Sprint corp.” I have used vonage for two years. Vonage’s monthly fee for unlimited local and long distance is still LESS that what I was paying sprint for local phone calls with the taxes. After all this time I remain very happy with the service vonage provides and use my patronage of their services as an opportunity to stick it to the big phone companies that have been sticking it to me for so long. The ONLY thing that will make me cancel Vonage is if they sell out to Sprint.

Horrible company.. Continued billing my account after my account had been closed and then refused to credit me..

Vonage is a dead company walking. Anyone who is still with Vonage is risking losing dial tone. New “routers” should be the least priority on this company’s list.

Apparently balancing their bottom line and fending off litigation is not as important.

I’ve been using Vonage since July 2004 and have been very happy with the service I’ve gotten.

They notify me by email when they’ve processed a payment, and notify me if they have trouble processing a payment.

While I’m not particularly happy with their outsourced and offshored customer service, overall, I’ve found them to be a good company.

Vonage? They could include the moon; and I’d still never go back. Worst customer support ever, and over fee-happy.

Great! A device that we stick in the basement and never look at - they’ll send us messages we need to read? I DOUBT IT! I already have a Firewall/Router at each of my connections - there’s would have to be AFTER mine no matter what since I do VPN’s between my locations too.

I’m a satisfied Vonage customer w/ my PAP2 that I take w/ me on my (frequent) travels. Can’t do that w/ the cable companies, so THERE IS AN ADVANTAGE that I don’t see described in many of the blogs.
