“Innovation in hardware is stagnant,” declared Geordie Rose, the guru of quantum computing, at Fortune’s iMeme conference. But that is changing, he claims. His company, Canadian-based D-Wave Systems, is working on commercializing a quantum computer that could dwarf what today’s supercomputers can do. Not everyone agrees it’s possible, but if Rose is right, the implications for computing are massive. As Rose explains it, everything in nature must obey the laws of physics, even human brains. And what computers can do is based on those laws; a chip or machine made out of matter has intrinsic limitations. As a consequence, it is fundamentally impossible to precisely simulate drug molecules, for example, using contemporary technology. The number of variables and information is simply too high and too complex. Quantum computing, in theory, can multiply the amount of information that can be stored and manipulated by storing them in “q-bits,” (quantum bits), which transfers computing out of the traditional 1-or-0 binary opposition that makes up bits of information. You can read a full-length Business 2.0 profile of Rose here. Rose’s position is: “Quantum computers are here, they are being experimented with.” He’s got a self-interest, of course. But if he and his company can make quantum computing work, then entire human mysteries may well be solvable with computers: the modeling of the human brain, the size of the universe, maybe even how to write an algorithm for airlines that can get every scheduled flight to a conference like this to land on time. To the religious wack-jobs that are commenting: your religion and corresponding intolerance has brought mostly misery to mankind. New technologies such as quantum computing will be far more beneficial for human civilization than your mythological & primitive religious CRAP. What does quantum computing has to do with God’s desire? I’m pretty sure the same comments were thrown about by people with similar mentality back in the day when electricity was discovered, when vacuum tube was invented & when silicon-based computing was invented. It’s the march of technology & it is unstoppable. Posted By anotherone, anothercity, anotherstate : July 13, 2007 11:23 pm
I believe the previous post from Yadgu in Texas is right. Posted By J Marc, Portage MI : July 13, 2007 5:31 pm
Then ask the Lord what time the movies are showing tonight. This is about the advancement of technology not the growth of your soul. Posted By Someone, somewhere, someplace : July 13, 2007 12:26 pm
What power source will they use, electricity or light pulses? Posted By darvish : July 13, 2007 8:29 am
It’s not going to happen. Man is constantly trying to invent a way to transcend humanity. But only God has the answers to the questions that man is searching for. If humankind seeks the Lord instead of quantum computing, then all of his questions will be answered and all of his desires will be fulfilled. Actually the religious folk needn’t use religion to warn people off; they just need point out the useless and bug-ridden software that those in the ‘know’ are producing in the here and now using childishly simple binary technology.
Since there aren’t enough people smart enough today to handle designing and programming for binary technology, who will do this for quantum technology? You?
Anyway, D-Wave is working on an computer system that is a analogy to quantum physics as they understand it. It is not quantum physics they are using to implement this computer.
