Santa Monica-based Headplay unveiled the latest in headmounted video displays on Friday. (Actually, they broke the news at Demo in the fall, but no harm no foul.) The Headplay device, which fits over the head like a ’70s tennis visor re-imagined for Venus Williams, is supposed to provide the experience of a 52″ screen as seen from six feet. Actual results may vary, however.

“While watching, I kept questioning whether the screen looked like a big screen, or a small one that looked like a big one because it was only a few inches away and I was wearing the equivalent of a scuba mask,” writes CNET’s Michael Kannelos. But Kannelos’ overall impression is positive. If not exactly a 52″ experience, Kannelos says the effect is far better than that of a portable DVD player or a JetBlue (JBLU) TV screen.

So, if you’ve got a space problem, or just travel alot, the Personal Cinema System hits the stores in June, and will retail for $499.
